Christ Church Opens Doors for Prayer and Meditation

Reverend Rosalie N. Richards of Christ Church, Episcopal, in North Canaan, instituted an Open Door Friday which started the first Friday in February. The Church doors are open for quiet prayer and meditation from 2pm until 5pm every Friday. All people from the Church and the community are welcome. There is a special Holy Communion Healing Service at 11:30-am on the 4th Friday of the month for those facing personal challenges or to offer prayers on behalf of others in need. Reverend Richards maintains office hours at the church each Friday from 12pm until 5pm. Call the Church office at 824-7410 for further information, and to add names to the prayer list if you cannot attend in person.

The Rev Dr. Rosalie Richards - Biography

Reverend Richards graduated from The General Theological seminary in 1981 and began her work at Grace Church, Nyack, NY. From there she continued her commitment to Latino ministry by working in the South Bronx and then at Church of the Ascension, New Haven, where she helped the parish develop a Hispanic congregation.

In 1988 Rosalie adopted her daughter Raquel, and began a time working fulltime outside of parish ministry, though throughout the years she continued as interim and supply pastor. During those years she also helped found a non-profit organization called Home Recovery which worked with single parent families and children during their time of transition from homelessness to having a more stable life. She also received an M.S.W. from Columbia University and a Ph.D. from the University of Texas School of Public Health. While working on her dissertation on nonviolent factors associated with ethnic violence she was a Visiting Fellow at Harvard University.

Rosalie returned to permanent parish ministry in 2006. At that time she accepted a position as Vicar at Christ Church, Canaan and Chapel of All Saints, Cornwall. The two communities contrast with each other and work together with an ease and graciousness that she finds remarkable.

Her enthusiastic and beautiful daughter is presently involved and thriving in her work with CitiYear (of Americorps) in New Hampshire. Rosalie notes that Raquel is energized about some of the programs that are being planned in this area during the Thanksgiving holidays.

The past year spent in the Northwest Corner has been one of deepening relationships and of a rich spiritual journey for Rosalie. She is grateful for the communities and for the opportunity to serve here. One person said to her, "Canaan is where you live when you are looking for quality of life." She agrees fully.

Recently someone asked Rosalie:
"What is the most important part of your priesthood?" She replied—"spirituality."

"What is, for you, the most important attribute of God?" --"Besides God's identity in love?—"Freedom."
"And what is the church for?" --"To support us in two ways--to find and develop our spirituality, and to learn what it is to serve God in each other."
